Submission Information:
Scarlet Letters, a bi-monthly webzine of womens erotica, is open for
submissions from women.
We are currently accepting and seeking:
- short fiction
- poetry
- visual art
- editorial pieces
- humor articles
What we are NOT looking for is:
- romance/confessional pieces
- anything that puts any of us to sleep, or
- the same old crap you see everywhere else.
Submission Guidelines for Prose and Poetry:
Prose/Poetry Submissions may be sent to:
[email protected]. Please type
"Submission - Scarlet Letters" in the subject of the mail.
-
Fiction pieces should be no more than 5 pages long, unless provisions
are made for it to be split into "episodes."
-
All submissions, fiction and non-fiction, should be sent single spaced
and pasted into mail and NOT sent in an attached file.
-
Non-fiction pieces should contain reference materials used, as well as URL's
to link to appropriate internet sites.
-
Please include copyright information as well as a short (2-5 lines max) bio
and either your name or pen name, as well as any information if the material
has been published previously elsewhere.
-
Any preferences for illustration for the piece submitted should be included
along with your bio information.
Scarlet Letters can not pay for submissions, but offers
instead high visibility and exposure of the work submitted, as well as a
rollicking good time with a great bunch of women.
Submission Guidelines for Artwork:
All submissions will be reviewed by a panel of professional
artists for inclusion in Scarlet Letters. Whether you are an amateur weekend
watercolorist or a well-respected and highly published professional, Scarlet
will help find a home for your richest visual fantasies. Consideration of
the following guidelines will strengthen the chances of inclusion of your
artwork in our e-zine:
-
Send us your most provocative, tasteful work. Think laterally: provocative
may range from a stolen glance between lovers to outright self-love. Overt
raunchiness will be passed over in favor of subtle, innovative and arousing
images.
-
Refer to live models and photographic reference when representing the human
form. Awkward anatomy is just that... awkward, and sometimes even disturbing.
Carefully observed anatomy is the hallmark of a talented, loving artist.
-
Observe copyright law and artist's rights. When in doubt, consult the art
director.
-
Scarlet's Chamber is an exhibition space to showcase collections of mature,
developed artwork by single artists or collaborators. Gallery collections
may be comprised of six to twelve images, preferably related to a theme or
unified by a single medium. Gallery exhibitors are encouraged to include
artist's statements and a biography. Consider material from previous Gallery
exhibitions to help form your own unique collection.
-
Single submissions will not be considered for hanging in Scarlet's Chamber
unless part of a larger thematic exhibition. Single illustrations will be
exhibited alongside prose, poetry, features and editorials. Artwork that
does not fit naturally within an issue's theme will be held for the next
appropriate issue.
-
An excellent way to get published is to create artwork for poetry and prose
submissions on a commission basis. Write to the art director for assignments
and create artwork especially to go alongside a specific piece. Expect to
propose a few sketches before creating a final image.
-
Designs for dingbats, borders, bars, and navigational graphics are welcomed
and encouraged.
-
Scarlet Letters publishes artwork by women and male-female collaborators
only.
Technical considerations:
Material may be sent in digital format to art Director
Alison King at [email protected].
Keep high-resolution copies of your artwork on your hard drive. Send images
at 72 DPI, preferably at the dimension of less than 600 pixels wide by 350
pixels high. This is the window size your artwork will ultimately be viewed
in. Every effort will be made to compress your artwork to 50K or less for
optimized presentation within Scarlet Letters. Be prepared to provide
high-resolution images at a later date for this purpose.
If you are not familiar with procedures for digitizing,
resizing and optimizing the color palette of your artwork, consult with the
art director. Please do not send files larger than 500K unless requested.
